Another day at the office...
I've just recently had a confrontation with one of them and I'm kicking myself.Student X is extremely apathetic and has zero desire to be in the class. His attendance is no better than the Maple Leafs power play these days - erratic at best.X missed an assigned project I gave to the rest of the class. When he did show up, I adapted the assignment to meet his needs (he's LD or identified - he's getting 6% overall in the course - and no, that's not a typo). We went over the newly adapted assignment together, I made my expectations clear and concise. The due date came and went (like our practicum huh?), and lo and behold no assignment.X arrived in class yesterday - I asked him if he had the assignment to which he replied he did not. I told him I would like to speak to him after class. Begrudgingly he complied. When the final bell rung, he attempted to leave the room without staying, I told him to take a seat, that we needed to talk but he refused, so I blocked the door and told him to sit down - so he sat on one of the desks, staring at the floor.I began to ask why he failed to do the assignment - to which he replied - "I dunno, I don't care what the @#$%@#$%@#$% do you care?" - the conversation went on like that for a minute. I allowed him to speak his mind, then I began to remind him that his language is inappropriate when addressing me. I asked him a few times to look me in the eye (which he refused). Then he began yelling at me. I told him "look, I like you, you can stay in the class, but your attitude is not welcome in the classroom). When it comes to 5th period, check your attitude at the door..."He yelled some more - and then...out of nowhere, in attempting to rush past me out the door (and my AT was watching all this for the most part) - I snapped and yelled at him to sit down and not to move until I tell him to.I felt like utter crap. He pushed my buttons and I reacted. Granted we're all new at this, but I'm so disappointed that I yelled in the end. I feel like anything I may have said up until that point is now useless and hopelessly ignored.
